Cargille Labs Precision Glass Refractive Index Standards

Set M-1

A unique collection of selective, comminuted optical glasses supplemented by purified minerals provide a reasonable range of refractive indices from 1.34 to 2.40 in increments of 0.01. This set supplements Cargille Refractive Index Liquids by explaining the types of standards available for microscopic identification by refractive index determinations.

The specimens were selected for their placement on the refractive index scale and for their accuracy and purity. As many optical glasses as possible were used, and new specimens are constantly being explored for possible inclusion as they contribute to the accuracy or completeness of the collection.

Approximately 1/2 cc of 60 different materials comminuted to -100 mesh are assembled as a set in a handsome mahogany stained wood case with tiered shelves for accessibility. Each specimen is contained in a labeled glass screw-thread vial with a plastic screwcap closure.

Set M-7

Of particular value to the mineralogist and forensic scientist interested in very accurate refractive index and dispersion measurement using Becke line and a hot stage microscope, is the M-7 Reference Set. Composed of comminuted optical glasses and purified minerals, selected for their optical precision, the set covers the same range of indices of refraction (1.34 to 2.40) and increments (pf 0.01) as Set M-1, but is accompanied by extensive technical data.

The accompanying data includes the following for each glass or mineral (when available):

Cauchy Dispersion Equation Constants, temperature coefficients, and precise refractive index values (±.0.00005, in most instances) at seven common wavelengths.

    Comminuted Minerals

    Microscopical examination of pure minerals in comminuted form provides insight to many individual characteristics of materials difficult to determine as solids. Some of the many properties which may be ascertained from comminuted materials are: exact determination of refractive indices by the immersion method, separation studies into isotropic and anisotropic groups, extent of birefringence, conoscopic observation of interference figures in particles oriented at random, crystallographic and cleavage studies, pleochroism (when present) in all shades of color, extinction angle with reference to cleavage traces, color observations of finely divided material, microscopic inclusions. Also, comminuted materials have broad applications in spectroscopy; specific gravity determinations and in many microchemical procedures.

    Complete Comminuted Minerals, Set M-4, consists of approximately 1/2 cc of the following 60 materials comminuted to -100 mesh in labeled screw-thread glass vials with plastic screw-cap closures and an attractive mahogany stained wood case.

    Reagents for Chemical Microscopy

    Sets 1 and 2 are only available in the United States

    A unique assemblage of 120 selective reagents are standard materialssupplied in two separate sets for diversified chemical microscopy applications. The Sets are organized as originally proposed by E.M. Chamot and C.W. Mason in their "Handbook of Chemical Microscopy" Volumes I and II. Set No. 1 and Set No. 2 correspond to the materials listed in these volumes, respectively. (Please note that Set No. 1 is not listed in the 4th Edition of Volume 1, but due to popular demand, it is continued as a stock item).

    Each Set contains approximately 1/2 cc of 60 different materials contained in labeled, glass, screw-thread vials, with plastic closures in a tiered wooden case. A material listing chart on the inside of the lid is indexed to the vials for easy and rapid location and retrieval. The Sets are supplied complete with two tapered glass applicator rods for manipulation and control on the microscope stage.
